Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade (MIFT Minister), Dr. Mohamed Farid Saleh, held a meeting with Serbia’s Minister of Domestic and Foreign Trade and Commissioner General for Expo 2027 in Belgrade, Ms. Jagoda Lazarević, in the presence of H.E. Ambassador Ahmed Salama Soliman, Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to the Republic of Serbia, to discuss avenues for enhancing economic and trade cooperation between the two countries, as well as arrangements for Egypt’s participation in Expo 2027 in Belgrade, scheduled from May to August 2027.
The meeting, held via video conference, addressed various areas of partnership, underscoring the importance of strengthening bilateral relations and unlocking new horizons for cooperation across industry, trade, and investment. These efforts aim to serve mutual interests, support economic growth, and reinforce the longstanding ties between the political leaderships in Cairo and Belgrade.
Discussions also covered ongoing preparations for Egypt’s participation in Expo 2027 in Belgrade, including the presentation of investment and trade opportunities to companies and investors from both sides, and the promotion of economic and cultural cooperation during this major international event. Both sides highlighted the free trade agreement signed last year, emphasizing the importance of putting all of its provisions into practice to unlock new markets for mutual exports.
It is worth noting that Expo 2027 is recognized as one of the largest and most prominent multilateral international events, organized under the auspices of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE). It represents a strategic platform for participating countries to promote their investment and tourism opportunities and to build long-term economic and trade partnerships, thereby advancing development efforts at both regional and global levels.
Dr. Farid extended his congratulations to the Serbian government on hosting Expo 2027 in Belgrade, affirming that Egypt’s commitment to ensuring its impactful and high-profile participation that reflects its regional standing—particularly in response to the gracious invitation extended to H.E. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.
MIFT Minister noted that Egypt is currently preparing a comprehensive presentation which it would share during its participation in the Expo 2027, with a view to maximizing the benefits of this global event in promoting promising investment and industrial opportunities. He also commended the Serbian side’s commitment to providing all necessary support and facilitation to ensure a distinguished Egyptian presence.
On her part, Ms. Lazarević, Serbia’s Minister of Domestic and Foreign Trade, revealed her country’s intention to strengthen its economic presence in the region by studying the establishment of a trade and economic office at the Serbian Embassy in Cairo—its first of its kind in Africa. This reflects Belgrade’s recognition of Egypt’s position as a key logistics and trade hub on the continent.
Dr. Farid extended an invitation to his Serbian counterpart to visit Egypt later this year to further advance areas of joint cooperation, while promoting greater momentum in bilateral trade and investment missions in the period ahead.
The Serbian Minister welcomed the invitation and extended a reciprocal invitation to Dr. Farid, noting that an official delegation is expected to visit Serbia in conjunction with Expo 2027 in Belgrade next year, in a move that will further strengthen economic partnership and consolidate frameworks for joint cooperation.
The meeting was attended by Minister Plenipotentiary for Trade, and Chairman of Egypt Expo & Convention Authority (EECA), Mr. Essam El-Naggar; the Head of the Egyptian Commercial Service (ECS), Dr. Abdelaziz El-Sherif; and Advisor to MIFT Minister for Institutional Communication and Minister Plenipotentiary for Trade, Mr. Ashraf Hamdy.
Expo 2027 in Belgrade is scheduled to take place in the Serbian capital from May 15, 2027 to August 15 2027, and is expected to attract more than 4 million visitors, with participation from over 120 countries.
